Walking with Derek Gow

The Heaths to Sea project team spent a fantastic day walking Otterton Hill, an 185ha site, parts of which have been identified for nature recovery and potential woodland creation.

Derek Gow, farmer turned nature conservationist, joined us for the site walk to give the team the benefit of his years of improving nature and species diversity on his own 300-acre farm. Heavily involved in the reintroduction of the Eurasian beaver in the area, Derek’s knowledge and understanding of the land and nature recovery is extensive. Surveying the topography and current agricultural use of Otterton Hill, Derek shared ideas for potential success and things to avoid. The team learnt how to spot Solitary Bee nests in soil banks, and how and how not to introduce various eco-system engineering species onto parcels of land.

“It is a jigsaw combined with a complicated juggling act” Derek told us, as he shared some of the ups and downs of his own journey. We were assured that “diversity is key” when considering successful, economically sustainable long-term management of nature enhanced areas.

Clinton Devon Estates will continue to benefit from Derek’s expertise and experience as we consider all options for sustainable nature recovery on this site. The project vision remains at the forefront of decision making; long-term nature recovery through innovative solutions is possible whilst also supporting food production, net zero, timber and access needs.

Heaths to Sea is a Defra-funded Landscape Recovery initiative spanning over 4,000 hectares of the lower Otter Valley. During the 2-year development phase, the project team at Clinton Devon Estates are working with local land managers to consider plans and consulting with local communities to ensure their views are included.

Please get involved and share your thoughts on nature recovery in the lower Otter Valley.
